Welcome to Landcare in the Lake Wellington Catchment.
The Lake Wellington Catchment Landcare Network is made up of 3 sub networks, Maffra & Districts Landcare Network, Central Latrobe Landcare Network and West Gippsland Landcare Network. There are a total of 32 Landcare groups in the Lake Wellington Landcare Network. Representatives from each network form the Lake Wellington Landcare Network Board of Management along with Landcare and agency staff representatives. This community driven board provides the direction and impetus to manage the Landcare projects within the Lake Wellington Catchment and represents the huge support that the community gives to these projects. The Lake Wellington Catchment forms the northern component of the West Gippsland CMA region and encompasses the area from Warragul in the west to Licola in the north, Boolarra in the south and Munro in the east. The Latrobe, Thomson, Macalister and Avon Rivers all rise in the highland region and flow south - south east though the alluvial plains into Lake Wellington, part of the coastal chain of lagoons which forms the Gippsland Lakes. The Catchment supports a strong agricultural, forestry and industrial economy. It supports the states second largest irrigation district (Macalister Irrigation District), and supplies a large proportion of Melbourne's water supplies (Thomson Dam). The community at large recognises the importance of local wetlands, watercourses and native bush areas and the threats that are undermining their health and integrity, and throughout the Catchment, various actions are being undertaken in an attempt to address these issues.
